How to Become a Psychiatrist

What comes into your mind when you hear the word, “Psychiatry”? Most probably, you would be thinking about mental illnesses and that is right. Psychiatry is directly related to the service of helping people with mental illness. If you are interested in knowing more about how to become a psychiatrist, continue reading.

A psychiatrist is a doctor for mental health care that means it is necessary for those who are interested in becoming a psychiatrist to take 4-year courses in any medical schools to get a medical degree. After that, you need to undergo residential training in psychiatry for you to be able to fully get the title for yourself. In that residential training after becoming a medical doctor, you are already getting salary and it could be called as an On the Job training already, meaning you will be working with patients already, it’s just that you will still have supervision.

For the basic thing, you need to be a student who loves science, especially chemistry, biology and physics as these three will help you gain further knowledge about our body especially the mind. You also have to get subjects from social sciences such as general psychology as this is vital in understanding the mental area of a person. Psychiatry is not an easy job since you will be dealing with people who have problem with their mental capabilities that is why it is necessary for you to gain experience in talking to several patients and understanding their needs. But before you will be able to be called as a full pledged psychiatrist, you need to take and pass the licensure exam for psychiatrists which is the United States Medical Licensing Examination. After passing this exam, you are now a real psychiatrist.

And as every doctor, they each have their own specialty, that is the same with psychiatrists, there is the child psychiatry which obviously focus on the mental needs of children, the geriatric psychiatry which is the exact opposite of the child psychiatry as it focus on old people and the forensic psychiatry which is relevant to the government as it helps with the court to determine whether a person is capable of standing in a trial.

It’s a long way with a lot of learning, experience and certain skills that are necessary in the profession.
